MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION

Medical transcription is the process of translating digital audio recordings of medical dictations into text format, typically in a word document. Most often, doctors or their aides dictating for doctors can be heard in the voice files. They narrate notes about patient interactions, which are then made available in a digital format that a trained medical transcriptionist listens to and types (transcribes).

The main goals of medical transcribing are twofold. The transcription serves as a medical record that the doctor must present to the insurance provider in order for his claim to be authorised. Second, each document is a legal document that can be used as evidence for or against the doctor in the event that a medical malpractice claim is made.

Regarding the skill sets required for medical transcription, one must complete a 6- to 8-month training programme where they learn the fundamentals of all body systems, medical terminology, such as the names of diseases and medical devices, surgical techniques, drug names, transcription rules, English grammar, spelling, and some good typing techniques. A medical transcriptionist is also knowledgeable about the various kinds of medical reports, including SOAP notes, consultation reports, discharge summaries, and procedure notes.
